How does image-automation-controller know which field in a YAML file to update?

Answer: A # {"$imagepolicy": "flux-system:my-app"} comment on that line
Explanation
Setters are comments at the end of a line. The plain form updates the full image reference, and :tag or :name update just that part. Only marked fields under the automation's update path change. Flux v1 used the fluxcd.io/automated annotation, which current Flux ignores.
